Digital copyright is still a developing area, and is a potential minefield for information professionals. In the UK there is no Act of Parliament specifically addressing copyright for materials in digital form. Rather the profession is reliant on the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, and how this relates to machine-readable content. This book examines in depth how digital content is treated differently from hard-copy material. The second edition includes a new chapter that takes an in-depth look at digital rights management (DRM). It takes account of the All Party Internet Group’s findings of their public inquiry into DRM, published in June 2006; and the Gowers Review of Intellectual Property of December 2006. It also offers a new section on copyright clearance for digital content; current examples of the penalties imposed for file sharing, piracy and counterfeiting; and additional case law examples. This title covers topics such as: database right; the application of copyright to websites and intranets; the use of screenshots in presentations; hyperlinking and deep linking; how the copyright exceptions apply to digital content; licences, contracts, or a set of terms and conditions; the interface between copyright law and contract law; model licence agreements; The Copyright and Related Rights Regulations 2003: including the newoffences, particularly relating to the removal or alteration of rightsmanagement information; and the question of circumventing technical protection measures such as DRM systems; digital signatures; relevant legal cases; and, further reading. This essential guide will help all information professionals find out what needs to be done to stay within the law in our increasingly digital environment.

An important continuation to “CMOS: Circuit Design, Layout, and Simulation”

The power of mixed-signal circuit designs, and perhaps the reason they are replacing analog-only designs in the implementation of analog interfaces, comes from the marriage of analog circuits with digital signal processing. This book builds on the fundamental material in the author’s previous book, “CMOS: Circuit Design, Layout, and Simulation,” to provide a solid textbook and reference for mixed-signal circuit design. The coverage is both practical and in-depth, integrating experimental, theoretical, and simulation examples to drive home the why and the how of doing mixed-signal circuit design. Some of the highlights of this book include: A practical/theoretical approach to mixed-signal circuit design with an emphasis on oversampling techniques An accessible and useful alternative to hard-to-digest technical papers without losing technical depth Coverage of delta-sigma data converters, custom analog and digital filter design, design with submicron CMOS processes, and practical at-the-bench deadbug prototyping techniques Hundreds of worked examples and questions covering all areas of mixed-signal circuit design

A helpful companion Web site, http: //cmosedu.com, provides worked solutions to textbook problems, SPICE simulation netlist examples, and discussions concerning mixed-signal circuit design.

This book focuses on Least Squares Support Vector Machines (LS-SVMs) which are reformulations to standard SVMs. LS-SVMs are closely related to regularization networks and Gaussian processes but additionally emphasize and exploit primal-dual interpretations from optimization theory. The authors explain the natural links between LS-SVM classifiers and kernel Fisher discriminant analysis. Bayesian inference of LS-SVM models is discussed, together with methods for imposing spareness and employing robust statistics.

The framework is further extended towards unsupervised learning by considering PCA analysis and its kernel version as a one-class modelling problem. This leads to new primal-dual support vector machine formulations for kernel PCA and kernel CCA analysis. Furthermore, LS-SVM formulations are given for recurrent networks and control. In general, support vector machines may pose heavy computational challenges for large data sets. For this purpose, a method of fixed size LS-SVM is proposed where the estimation is done in the primal space in relation to a Nystrom sampling with active selection of support vectors. The methods are illustrated with several examples.

Bipedal locomotion is among the most difficult challenges in control engineering. Most books treat the subject from a quasi-static perspective, overlooking the hybrid nature of bipedal mechanics. Feedback Control of Dynamic Bipedal Robot Locomotion is the first book to present a comprehensive and mathematically sound treatment of feedback design for achieving stable, agile, and efficient locomotion in bipedal robots. In this unique and groundbreaking treatise, expert authors lead you systematically through every step of the process, including: -Mathematical modeling of walking and running gaits in planar robots -Analysis of periodic orbits in hybrid systems -Design and analysis of feedback systems for achieving stable periodic motions -Algorithms for synthesizing feedback controllers -Detailed simulation examples -Experimental implementations on two bipedal test beds The elegance of the authors’ approach is evident in the marriage of control theory and mechanics, uniting control-based presentation and mathematical custom with a mechanics-based approach to the problem and computational rendering. Concrete examples and numerous illustrations complement and clarify the mathematical discussion. A supporting Web site offers links to videos of several experiments along with MATLAB(R) code for several of the models. This one-of-a-kind book builds a solid understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of truly dynamic locomotion in planar bipedal robots.

Taking a completely hands-on approach, using cheap and easily available robotics kits, Practical and Experimental Robotics provides a detailed exploration of the construction, theory, and experiments for different types of robots. With topics ranging from basic stamp microcontrollers to biped and propeller based robots, the text contains laboratory experiments, examples with solutions, and case studies. The authors begin with a review of the essential elements of electronics and mechanics. They describe the basic mechanical construction and electrical control of the robot, then give at least one example of how to operate the robot using microcontrollers or software. The book includes a reference chapter on Basic Stamp Microcontollers with example code pieces and a chapter completely devoted to PC interfacing. Each chapter begins with the fundamentals, then moves on to advanced topics, thus building a foundation for learning from the ground up. Building a bridge between technicians who have hands-on experience and engineers with a deeper insight into the workings, the book covers a range of machines, from arm, wheel, and leg robots to flying robots and robotic submarines and boats. Unlike most books in this field, this one offers a complete set of topics from electronics, mechanics, and computer interface and programming, making it an independent source for knowledge and understanding of robotics.

Its promise of providing a simpler, cheaper, more power-efficient WPAN (Wireless Personal Area Network) alternative to WiFi and Bluetooth has opened up new data collection possibilities in application areas from industrial controls to medical devices to intruder alarms. Yet, despite this widespread interest, there is still little information available that goes beyond detailing the spec itself. Missing from the current ZigBee lexicon is practical, application-oriented guidance from an expert, specifically geared to aid engineers in implementing this new technology. Enter respected designer and popular columnist Fred Eady! With his new book, he provides the only comprehensive how-to ZigBee guide available.
-The ONLY one-stop Zigbee resource available- from basics to sniffers to specs
-7 easy-to-assemble ZigBee projects allow the reader to follow along…hands-on!
-Working hardware and software examples included in every chapter

Technology-based entrepreneurial firms are an integral part of the knowledge economy, and business incubation programs focused on technology-based companies play a crucial role in accelerating the growth of these firms. NBIA performed a national benchmarking analysis to gain a better understanding of technology business incubation best practices. Cases studies, data on incubator characteristics, descriptions of community factors and more provide valuable information for incubator developers, managers and stakeholders.

Membrane computing is a branch of natural computing which investigates computing models abstracted from the structure and functioning of living cells and from their interactions in tissues or higher-order biological structures. The models considered, called membrane systems (P systems), are parallel, distributed computing models, processing multisets of symbols in cell-like compartmental architectures. In many applications membrane systems have considerable advantages a” among these are their inherently discrete nature, parallelism, transparency, scalability and nondeterminism.

In dedicated chapters, leading experts explain most of the applications of membrane computing reported so far, in biology, computer science, computer graphics and linguistics. The book also contains detailed reviews of the software tools used to simulate P systems.

Computational logic is a fast-growing field with applications in artificial intelligence, constraint solving, and the design and verification of software and hardware systems. Written with graduate and advanced undergraduate students in mind, this textbook introduces computational logic from the foundations of first-order logic to state-of-the-art decision procedures for arithmetic, data structures, and combination theories.

This textbook also presents a logical approach to engineering correct software. The increasing ubiquity of computers makes implementing correct systems more important than ever. Verification exercises develop the reader’s facility in specifying and verifying software using logic. The treatment of verification concludes with an introduction to the static analysis of software, an important component of modern verification systems.

For readers interested in learning more about computational logic, decision procedures, verification, and other areas of formal methods, the final chapter outlines courses of further study.

Written for an advanced-level course in digital systems design, DIGITAL SYSTEMS DESIGN USING VHDL integrates the use of the industry-standard hardware description language VHDL into the digital design process. Following a review of basic concepts of logic design in Chapter 1, the author introduces the basics of VHDL in Chapter 2, and then incorporates more coverage of VHDL topics as needed, with advanced topics covered in Chapter 8. Rather than simply teach VHDL as a programming language, this book emphasizes the practical use of VHDL in the digital design process. For example, in Chapter 9, the author develops VHDL models for a RAM memory and a microprocessor bus interface; he then uses a VHDL simulation to verify that timing specifications for the interface between the memory and microprocessor bus are satisfied. The book also covers the use of CAD tools to synthesize digital logic from a VHDL description (in Chapter 8), and stresses the use of programmable logic devices, including programmable gate arrays. Chapter 10 introduces methods for testing digital systems including boundary scan and a built-in self-test.

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are evolving into highly integrated technologies for a variety of application areas. Add the biological dimension to the mix and a host of new problems and issues arise that require a broad understanding of aspects from basic, materials, and medical sciences in addition to engineering. Collecting the efforts of renowned leaders in each of these fields, BioMEMS: Technologies and Applications presents the first wide-reaching survey of the design and application of MEMS technologies for use in biological and medical areas. This book considers both the unique characteristics of biological samples and the challenges of microscale engineering. Divided into three main sections, it first examines fabrication technologies using non-silicon processes, which use materials that are appropriate for medical/biological analyses. These include UV lithography, LIGA, nanoimprinting, injection molding, and hot-embossing. Attention then shifts to microfluidic components and sensing technologies for sample preparation, delivery, and analysis. The final section outlines various applications and systems at the leading edge of BioMEMS technology in a variety of areas such as genomics, drug delivery, and proteomics. Laying a cross-disciplinary foundation for further development, BioMEMS: Technologies and Applications provides engineers with an understanding of the biological challenges and biological scientists with an understanding of the engineering challenges of this burgeoning technology.
